Dance Movement Therapy

Emotions make us human. E – Motion refers to Energy in Motion. Emotions are meant to be expressed and have to be moved through expression in some way, to feel relief.
DMT – Dance Movement Therapy is a form of Therapy where stress is relieved through flowing dance movements along with some props like calming pictures, crayons etc. It helps in distressing and reduces muscular tension. It is an effective platform to achieve relief through the release of tension stored in the body, often unconsciously, due to unexpressed emotions. This Pandemic has been hard on everyone but especially so on teachers who had to learn skills on taking online classes, literally overnight. These are stressful times indeed. Hence a need was recognized to organize a distressing event for our hardworking teachers.
The Department of Counseling and Special Education organized a webinar on DMT on 28th NOV. where the resource person Ms. Shweta Mahesh worked with our teachers online to distress through this technique. In this hour-long session, Ms Shweta provided techniques using which the stressed teachers felt relief as evident in their comments in the chatbox. Ms. Shweta demonstrated how to move different parts of the body, showed pictures of waterfalls, mountains, woods, sea etc and gently asked how a particular picture made teachers feel or think. This resulted in catharsis and hence, our objective- relief.
